Continuing US, EU sanctions on Burundi add to economic woes

In Burundi, motorists are lining up to get fuel and traders cannot buy goods because of a shortage in foreign currency.

Economists say that western sanctions imposed on the country, plus the economic fallout from the COVID-19 pandemic, are making life difficult for its residents.

The EU slapped asset freezes on the country after former President Pierre Nkurunziza's decision to run for a controversial third term in office in 2015.
