Universal Design for Learning (UDL) is a set of principles to use when designing learning materials to make learning more accessible. The goal of OER is similarly to make learning more accessible. But what does it mean to make learning “accessible”? The presenter will discuss many facets of accessibility and openness that are often overlooked in OER creation, such as web accessibility for those with disabilities, issues of Internet connectivity, visual design, multimedia design, and designing for learners with learning disabilities and non-native English speakers. We will also discuss how OER can be better designed with accessibility and diverse learner needs in mind, looking at how the principles of UDL can be used in OER creation and editing by providing multiple means of engagement, representation, and action and expression.
